This past Earth Day, Allied Printing Services, a Northeastern print company installed 4,591 solar panels on single roof of its 275,000-square-foot facility in Manchester, Connecticut. After three months of work, the project was completed this past week, as reported by Fox CT.

The 1.4-megawatt system will provide around 17 percent of the company's total electricity usage — the equivalent of planting 27,000 acres of trees or powering 145 homes for a year. Energy efficiency in Connecticut has been growing extensively in the past several years and Allied Printing President John Sommers said he hopes more companies will do what his has done to help the environment. Sommers said it is exciting to know that the future growth of his company will be powered by the sun.

In addition to the solar panels, the company purchased new printing equipment that will also be entirely powered by solar. The panels are photovoltaic solar systems, which generate electricity by converting sunlight into electrical energy. Using these panels will also curb around 1,116,000 pounds of CO2 emissions a year.

"This solar installation will provide environmental benefits to Allied Printing and its Connecticut and global communities," Sommers said."It is part of our ongoing environmental sustainability program, and puts Allied in the forefront in utilizing renewable energy for the production of our clients' commercial printing needs.
